She’s got a
purse in her hand
broad hat for shade
she had felt stuck
so she packed up
and decided to leave
this town where all the rest
chose to stay
she was nostalgic
but hey
this was life and she surmised
it was just too short and fickle
to live it around unhappiness
all the time.
A townsman saw her
trying to ease toward the main road
suitcase following close behind
wobbling on the dusty stones
he beeped his horn and said
“Aren’t you Lynn’s friend, Peter’s daughter,
who works near the coal mining bin?”
“Yes, I am Sir” she carefully replied.
“I can carry you back in,
so you don’t waste your time,
looks like you’re leaving the town,
when it would be easier to stay”
“That’s what everyone says,
but no thanks Sir,
I’m not going back that way”
He paused for a minute
and took a look into her eyes
they were unbothered, yet restless
but her smile was polite
he saw she was determined
so he let her be
she wouldn’t make it far he thought
it’d be hard to start over
on her own two feet
she couldn’t make it on her own
no one ever did
they all turned back
soon as they met that large hill
he chuckled to himself
and left her with a smile,
but somehow it bothered him
her resolve...
he hadn’t seen that in anyone for a while.
She lounged on her suitcase;
her make shift seat
when up pulled the town’s mayor,
a casually dressed older lady
known for her sarcastic demeanour
and muti-worded flow
she spoke and never listened
always knew but never did know
“Where do you think you are going?”
“How were you planning to leave?”
“Looks like your suitcase is packed
but looks like you haven’t anything to eat.”
“You’ll need someone to help you.”
“You’ll eventually come right back here.”
“You’re young and idealistic,
and that doesn’t work in this town my dear”
“I think its best that you hop in,
after all it’ll soon be mid-day...”
She looked down her frames,
the young lady looked back
she eventually averted her eyes,
no one had ever stared directly
back at her
in such a calm, steady way,
quite like that.
Suddenly the young lady smiled
and shook her head,
almost as if she was going to laugh,
but she spoke words instead,
saying,
“Ma'am, thank you for your kind concern,
I’m sure we’ll meet again someday
but for now go on ahead,
I’m afraid I won’t be going back that way”
The hours passed and soon,
the sun seemed ready for the west.
The townspeople looked on and laughed;
you see, no buses had passed their way
for quite a spell
the hill could probably be climbed
but not with a large suitcase in hand
she definitely had not thought this
whole thing through
and down here no one was going
to lend her a hand...
There were three vehicles in this
town, and two had already passed by
the last one belonged to old crazy Sam
who used his for naps
during the afternoon times.
There was no chance of her getting keys
car-jacking wasn’t her style;
she looked at the hill beyond the ridge
a bit disconcerted
but decided to bide her time.
Eventually everyone got tired
of watching her sit there and wait
for a bus that would not pass by
even if she sat there all day,
and even if she ---
they never completed their thoughts
because they heard a low rumbling noise
It wasn’t a bus but a big old Cherokee
turqoise-blue painted,
the word Autonomy dazzling on the side.
It passed them so quickly
all that they saw was dust,
by the time they wiped their eyes
it had already come to a stop.
Intimidated, they watched.
The girl was afraid.
The person in the jeep
could have been her twin
same hair, nose and eyes
pink skirt, brown boots, dark glasses
her immediate reaction was to squint.
“I heard you needed a ride”
The driver remarked with a broad grin
“...and you are?” said our girl
Eyes suspicious, mouth in a line, set thin.
“Why, I’m you” said the other girl,
“And I’ve been waiting for a while,
...for you to woman up
and leave those folks behind...
you always threatened to,
but today I was quite surprised to see,
you actually packed your suitcase,
took your purse up and started to leave”
“Your story is a nice one,
but there’s something left to be said,
if you are me, then I am you,
why hadn’t both of us lived here instead?”
“I’m the side of you that’s been waiting
on you to use your head,
not alone, to be clear,
but in combination with your heart...”
“Those townsfolk are your doubts,
even old crazy Sam,
they exist because you let them,
so we had to live apart”
Back in the town, the folks were confused,
that vehicle had come out of no where,
the entrance to the town was blocked
so how the hell did it get here?
They watched as she spoke to the driver
but as they got closer to peek,
they could see
that she was just talking to herself.
There was no one in the front seat.
She’d gone crazy waiting out there so long
they nodded their head, unsurprised
things were about to get interesting;
even her common sense had left her
alone on that road side.
alone on that road side.
The only thing that didn’t
quite seem right was
indeed
indeed
that driver-less jeep
and they decided to stay back
for they weren’t about to die with her
in some random, inexplicable reality.
in some random, inexplicable reality.
Back on the road our girl
took a few moments to slowly think.
What if its true,
and old Sam, that man, and the mayor
Lynn and everyone else didn’t exist?
That meant nothing or no-one could
stop her from leaving this unhappy place
if it all came from her
she could alter her course in any way.
So she opened the door and started
to lift that heavy suitcase into the passenger’s side.
“I think you’d better leave that there,
this jeep is a zone
where no baggage is required”
And for once, the young lady,
where no baggage is required”
And for once, the young lady,
she understood,
that she had to leave it all
behind.
She was a butterfly tied to a rock
and if she tried to take it along
she would have trouble flying.
And in she jumped, engine revved
her twin smilingly looked her way,
“Are you sure you’re ready to leave?”
Our girl laughed.
“I’m moving on, I’m not going back that way!”
The townspeople watched
as she left her suitcase,
by its lonesome on the side of the road.
And with one swift climb she entered
into the Cherokee’s driver side,
the engine revved, and soon
the jeep was nothing but a dot of blue.
She was gone.
And they were left watching the place
she had been, long after the sun had set
still very confused
but they knew she'd probably make it
over that hill
that vehicle was powerfully built
and they watched and they waited
till a new day shone through
and Sam slept
relaxed because he already knew
that young lady would most likely
make it over that large hill,
and they could watch and wait
till the dawn became another noon.
She had left them behind...
and she wasn’t coming back
their way any time soon.
