#102 Overwhelmed

courtesy: middlewaysociety.org

He sat with his legs cris-crossed
Flesh hurting
From the ache of sitting
For so long on the uneven, bumpy surface
Of the verandah.
He was connected only
To the feeling of falling continuously
Within himself
Panic collapsing like lightning
Flickering idly across the
Expanse of the African tundra.
He could feel the pulse in his
Neck pound into his ears
More deafening
Than the sound of unannounced thunder
---
But you could never tell
As you crossed the street
Just in front
Of his small wooden
House
All they saw
Was Old Man Kane
In a meditative state
As was the norm before
beginning his morning yoga.

#90 Incredulous

courtesy: +Robert Kirchner

it hits my insides
so violently sometimes...
if I see something i know you'd like
      phrases you'd find interesting
music...guitar chords
been a while
but finally
i've touched the piano
                   because...
it hits my insides
making them drop.

outwardly,
i've stopped crying
but Lord knows
in my mind
this mourning hasn't stopped:

                 the thing is,
i forget sometimes...
because physically
i hadn't seen you in ages
just pictures
       on social media
       to remind each other of
our changing faces

we hardly spoke till we did
       and when we did
       it was...everything
the alchemist
the last book you sent me
read every word the same day
brain starved for something
        other than the non fictional
        pursuits of the body
I needed to know everyday...

then here comes
the sun
in the middle of mornings like
these
when randomly i hear
some song you sent me---
you knew my taste so well...
we just liked similar things I guess,

i've never had an idle conversation
  with you really
you know those types where
there's nothing to say
but people painfully continue talking anyway...?

you always shared something i never knew
of...

but now here comes
the sun
         moments like these
when I randomly hear
some song you sent me---
              its incredulous
that i'm shocked all over again...
         and as if this knowledge
was newly shared
it hits my insides
so violently.

     you're no longer here
no longer here?
...
even if I wanted to tell you of
something I thought you'd like to hear
begin one of our conversations,

     or sing you a song...

when last did I sing you a song?

it hits my insides so violently...
and it hurts all
over again.
             but it will go away...
as it always does
             life continues on
until something reminds me of you
randomly just like today;
and it hits my insides
                 so violently
incredulous...it is
to realise   that you are gone.

#40 Life Doesn't Give You a Minute

Life doesn't give you a minute

You're finally adjusting

to losing a friend

when another one

leaves

taking his beautiful heart with him

Sometimes you need a breath

in between

the transition

between grieving and living

but the lines sometimes

blur and you become

accustomed to

just being

The salty flow

is ever at the edge

of your lids

but don't run over

because it almost

never stopped the

last time it had started

Through the lows

though

there is a peace

that comes

from knowing

that both lives were

spent shining with

heaven's love.

One young

one older

but the end though

different

both lives rested in a solid faith

that was held high on both

their shoulders

Life doesn't give you a minute

to waste,

at its very end

all will depend on

what you gave away

and the love and hope

you chose to expend.

#21 The Hidden Ones

                                                          courtesy: Beatriz Martin Vidal

We vanished into the night
walking among threats
held by the daylight
on feet that had become sore
from the pain of survival.

Grasping to sweet memories, long past
so to conquer the induced fast
exacted by hatred’s womb
then birthed by the chill of indifference…

Voluntarily, we locked ourselves in
from fear of our own kin
who deemed us unfit to live
in our shared lands
though we bled, loved and dreamed
just as they did;
assuming out of arrogance
that this world was their own
they fought and killed to govern alone
forgetting that at the end of it all
there has been only one ruler that ever stood.

Darkness became our friend
In the small spaces and tight corners
that were lent
to us by those who gave us hope
that the goodness in humanity
had not at long last
faded.

We shriveled into
unrecognizable creatures of despair
and desperately thirsted
for fresh ,open air
that once,
taken for granted
had now become to us
an unreachable luxury.

How many times did we cry?
till our tears evolved into
wells, refusing to be dried
then became floods of outrage
that mingled with the mockery of our own silence?

How many times did we ask
for this oppression to pass?
and sought answers to reasons why
it had been deemed fit to begin and continue at all?
Our children will die
without even understanding the reason why
their life was hailed as meaningless
before crowds whose faces resembled our own...

Why was it
the blood in their veins
though one and the same
with others who reveled in
their destruction
without shame
was considered less human
to even let the round drops solidify
into guttural cries that were fit to be heard?

Our world sinks deeper each day
in this universal story of hate
that has surpassed boundaries,
colours and tribes...
indecently repeated by the history
we quote, honour, promote
the same we have learnt
absolutely nothing from.

Cycles can only be stopped
if just one has valour to stand still
and fairly admit that in the domino effect
of our lukewarm ill will
we share the blame
and bear guilt towards our own kind,
.humans...
Whom through our insatiable need
for superiority
have been by us divided
simplified, and categorized…
Stratified into sectors and numbers
to make our evil more tastefully applied
to polluted borders
already shattered
by our  foul, reprobate minds.

Protecting what has never been ours to keep
selfishly rejecting before
wondering...
What if they were me?
When the answer stares
back at us steadily
from beneath our landmines
and empty shelled camaraderie.
Our meaningless pride
and the impending defeat
of power, wealth
and injudicious conceit
has trampled
the spirit of brotherly love
leaving us
the hidden ones...
in the advent of our own plight
and trapped in the pits of our own deceit.

#20 The Choice

I wish I could pull you out of that rut…
the one you’ve been living in
we all have our own special kind
but its seems that you’ve become
accustomed to staying in
this
dreary atmosphere
you didn’t create
but evolved out of situations in life
and now
you’ve owned it
sitting there
looking into its darkness so long
vacant, alone
you’ve consciously abandoned
then forgot about
that other place
you cherished
called home…
This
home isn’t the kind
that common walls enclose
it’s not the place associated with
your family’s highs and lows
It’s who you are beneath all of this
confusion and loss
this anger, depression
and cynicism of trust...
It’s the you that existed
in an innocent plot.
It’s the you that
still cradles an essence of love.
It’s the you that is strong enough to
look
.Up...
and
take control of the power
you’ve been given
to get out of that rut
and move on with your life
not looking down again ever
to that hole that you made a haven
of smothered joy
magnified guilt
and aborted prayers
you never believed in enough to utter…
I wish I could pull you out of your rut;
it would be…
my greatest pleasure
but it’s your choice and not my arms,
though outstretched still
that determines if you stay in that gutter.
